The Oathing Stone: An Ancient Celtic Wedding Tradition
One of the origins of the wedding vow in Celtic tradition is the oathing the stone. This ancient ceremony is rooted deeply in the Celtic tribal traditions. To understand why it was so important, you have to know a little bit about the Celtic world view.
Celtic tribal people were, like many tribal folk in those times and even today, intimately tied to spirit of place. Important vows were given at very specific and sacred places. In fact many of the old tribal names are descriptive of a particular place or natural feature such as a lake, river, valley or mountain. Spirits were associated with each of these places, often tied directly to the tribe. In many cases, these spirits were regarded as ancestral spirits of the forebears of the Celts living there now. Having connection and blessing from the ancestors and the land was a critical ingredient to any important new venture—particularly, marriage.
Thus, the oathing stone tradition goes far, far back into the Celtic spirit. A physical object, such as a stone or piece of wood, was used to help transfer the wedding oaths to the spirit energies present in a sacred location. It served as a kind of mediator or bridge between the couple, ancestors and the immediate sacred place. A couple wedding, with the oathing stone, was witness by the people and the chief, as well as the ancestors, tied to the land. This intimacy with the environment was critical for futuresurvival. For a couple, the oathing stone helped root their future into the wisdom of the past at the start of their new life.
At the end of the ceremony, the oathing stone often went on its own journey. A stone could be tossed into a lake by both the bride and groom. Perhaps it would be thrown over a cliff into the sea far below. Sometimes the oathing stone was laid reverentially upon a cairn of similar vows in a glade, niche or hollow.
As Celts became Christianized, such traditions, while allowed in the early Church were disparaged. Such a practice was considered contrary to monotheism and trinity. Indeed, the Bible prohibits such idolatry and pagan worship. Yet with the Celts (and many other tribal folk, really) old ways die hard. The substance of the ritual is lost and what remains is merely a shadow. What became a serious obligation of honoring one’s lineage and ancestry, slowly changed to a quaint and novel custom.
With the emergence of the New Age type of perspective, such traditions have been slowly coming back into favor. In our contemporary Celtic culture, we are extremely mobile. Ancestors and spirits are as commonly acknowledge as they were in the past. The meaning of the oathing stone have subtly changed to be declared an honoring of the spirit of place, or a charm for luck and prosperity. In ancient times, it would be extremely bad form to neglect one’s ancestors on such a propitious day as a day of wedding. The Oathing Stone was but one way of honoring them.
In the more modern version of this ritual, the minister or priest will be presented the stone by a member of the wedding party: the Best Man, The Chief Maiden, or a parent of the Bride or Groom. The officiant will hold the stone and invite the groom to lay his hands onto the stone, and therewith give consent to in the presence of all of his ancestors both living and dead to bear witness to the words of power that he will speak. The words of his personal commitment to the woman he loves by the vows he brings forward. The same invitation is made to the Bride. Once both are holding the stone, they each recite their vows to one another.
Once complete, the stone is placed in a place of honor for the remainder of the ceremony. After the ceremony is complete, the newly married company release the stone back to the elements by whatever means is felt as being the most appropriate. Some people may toss it into the sea or the lake or river. Others may lay it upon a mountain or a man made cairn. Still others may wish to keep the stone and add it to the garden of the new home they make together or in a prominent location within their home.

Oil Magick
Our ancestors used oils in ceremony and ritual hundreds and even thousands of years ago. Because many essential oils are still available, we can continue making our own blends today. In the past, oils were created by placing oil or fat over a heat source, and then adding fragrant herbs and flowers to the oil. Many companies today offer synthetic oils at a fraction of the cost of essential oils (essential oils are the ones actually extracted from a plant). However, for magical purposes it's best to use authentic, essential oils -- these contain the magical properties of the plant, which synthetic oils do not have.
Spiritual Oils, whether they be hand-crafted herbal oils, ritual oils, condition oils, aromatherapy oils, or just pretty-smelling essential oils, are one of the largest and most varied of the ceremonial tools used in Witchcraft and Paganism. They come in all sorts of flavors, colors, and kinds and it can often seem a daunting task to know which oil to pick and how to use it in casting a spell.
Witchcraft and Paganism is full of ceremonies, rituals and events celebrating times of change on the wheel of the year, changes in our lives, as well as specific working rituals. These rites and rituals more than often use specific items and tools such as candles, magical herbs, spiritual incense, and, of course, oils. All of these types of tools possess symbolic aspects that enhance the event or the desired results sought in the magical spell or ritual ceremony. Spiritual Oils are associated with the hidden fifth element of Spirit and help us reach out into the unseen ether and summon from it the forces we wish to communicate with or use in our rites and rituals.
Types of Oils
There are several basic kinds of oils that you might encounter in Witchcraft; theses include ritual oils, condition oils, aromatherapy oils, essential oils and handcrafted oils. Our ancestors used oils in their rituals and ceremonies hundreds, even thousands, of years ago and because many of the essential oils they used are still available to us we can continue to make our own blends and recreate traditional recipes today.
Ritual Oils is the general name for oils used to anoint candles, ritual tools, material, furniture, money, and other such items, and when use to anoint the body are often also called Anointing Oils.
Condition Oils is a term found only in Hoodoo and Conjure practice; it refers to all anointing and dressing oils that are utilized in rites, rituals, or spell-craft to address or remediate an unwanted condition or to bring about a desired condition. Because these oils were developed by practitioners of the African American folk magic path, which is called Conjure or Hoodoo, they are also known as Conjure Oils, Hoodoo Oils, and Lucky oils.
Aromatherapy Oils are oils used in a healing art whose roots lay in antiquity. This practice traces back more than 6,000 years to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and probably Chinese who used to burn scented flowers and herbs and enjoy aromatic bath, massage and skin care for curative and cosmetic purposes.
Essential Oils are volatile, concentrated oils, usually having the characteristic odor or flavor of the plant from which they are obtained, and are primarily used to make perfumes, flavorings, and accentuate ritual and spiritual oil blends.
Synthetic Fragrance Oils are compounds created in a laboratory that smell a lot -- or a little-- like the natural flowers or herbs after which they have been named. A lot of companies today offer Synthetic Oils rather than Essential Oils because Synthetic Oils can be obtained at a fraction of the cost of Essential Oils. But, for magickal purposes it's always best to use real Essential Oils whenever possible, as these contain the magickal properties of the plant from which they are distilled, which the synthetic oils do not.
Handcrafted Oils and Herbal Oils are blends made up for specific ritual or magickal purposes. They are not made in a factory, but are indivisually prepared with the addition of magical herbs, roots, flowers and other natural ingredients to a simple oil base and then ritually charged with intent. Ritual Oils and Condition Oils may be considered to be "handcrafted herbal oils" only if they contain actual herbal ingredients and have been made by hand and consecrated according to the tenets of Witchcraft tradition or Hoodoo practice.
Carrier Oils are various oils, both vegetable and mineral, that are used to help dilute Essential Oils that might cause severe irritation or reaction to some people if applied to the skin undiluted. Carrier Oils help dilute and thus stretch out the volume of Essential oils used in Ritual Oils and Condition Oils. A number of different oils have been, and are, used as Carrier Oils.
Olive Oil has an ancient history of being used as a Carrier Oil and is often seen used in oils meant to help in blessing and anointing.
Mineral Oil traditionally has been used for blending Hoodoo Condition Oils in which one or more ingredients are minerals, such as Lodestone Oil. If the oil is focused upon the energies of mineral curios such as sulphur, lodestone, or pyrite, then a mineral-oil carrier amplifies, rather then subdues the energies of those minerals
Almond Oil became a popular Carrier oil due to its lighter scent and texture over the heavier Olive Oil. Almond Oil, unlike Olive Oil, does not dominate the natural fragrance of the herbs and Essential Oils that are blended in the handcrafting process.
Spiritual Oils can be used in a vast number of ways. Your oils can be one of the most important tools in your ritual space. Candles, crystals, amulets, talismans and other charms may be anointed with Spiritual Oils and this is really a great way to turn simple mundane items into items of magickal power and energy as well as charge already magickally empowered ritual tools.
Ritual Witchcraft Oils can also be used to anoint the body. If you are using an Oil to use for this purpose, be sure that the oil is skin safe. Some essential oils, such as cinnamon and clove, can cause a severe reaction to the skin and should really be used quite sparingly. Spiritual Oils that are applied to the body bring the wearer the energies of the oil, so a Power Oil will give you give you a boost up, a Courage Oil will give you strength and bravery in the face of your fears and adversaries, and a Blessing Oil will convey the grace of the Goddess upon yourself and your ventures.
The following is a list of Ritual Oils used by Pagans and Witches, Their properties that can be used in assistance of your magickal work.
ABRAMELIN OIL This sacred oil comes down from an ancient Jewish formula specified by Abramelin the Mage from a medieval grimoire called “The Book of the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage”. This oil and its accompanying ritual powder are both highly esteemed by those who follow more ceremonial magickal traditions, and it is of great benefit to those who follow the course of ritual activities.
BLESSING OIL This magickal oil can be used to bless new babies, new ventures, new homes, and for healing. Amplified with sincere prayer, will and intent it can also be used to help purify you or your home, to relieve suffering, or bring about spiritual healing.
PLANETARY OILS The seven sacred planets (the five visible planets plus the Sun and Moon) relate to the days of the week and also planetary hours within days and seven sacred planets were associated with ancient Gods and Goddesses. The use then of these planets and their hours has an ancient history in Witchcraft and Paganism. These oils help invoke the powers and characteristics of the individual planetary power. You can use these oils to anoint candles, or wear them as personal scent to help convey the power of the deities represented by the Planets. Making Your Own Oils
While many commercial vendors would have you believe that there's some Super Secret Magical Method for blending oils, it's actually pretty simple. First, determine your intent - whether you're creating a money oil to bring you prosperity, a love oil to boost your romantic encounters, or a ritual oil to use in ceremonies.
Once you've determined your intent, assemble the essential oils called for in the recipes. In a clean container, add 1/8 Cup of your base oil -- this should be one of the following:
Safflower
Grapeseed
Jojoba
Sunflower
Almond
Using an eyedropper, add the essential oils in the recipes. Be sure to follow the recommended proportions. To mix, don't stir... swirl. Swish the essential oils into the base oil by swirling in a clockwise direction. Make sure you store your oil blends in a place away from heat and moisture. Keep them in dark-colored glass bottles, and be sure to label them for use. Write the date on the label, and use within six months.
There are a number of ways you can use your oils in a ritual setting. They are often rubbed on candles for use in spellwork - this blends the powerful energies of the oil with the magical symbolism of the candle's color and the energy of the flame itself.
I found all of the oil recipes below here. Great website!
Most magical oil recipes call for the various essential oils to be added to 1/8 cup of base or carrier oil. This base oil can be any of the following: Jojoba, Grapeseed, Apricot, Almond Oil. Morrigan Celtic War Goddess
Morrigan Also known as MORRIGHAN, MORRIGU, MORRIGNA
Megalithic Military Mother Goddess and 'Phantom Queen'
As a shape-changer she can transform from ravishing beauty to hag — or battle crow to BEAN-NIGHE — in triple time. This has caused a great deal of confusion to careless mythologists and innocent Godcheckers. Some sources claim there are three of her. But as her sisters BADB and NEMAINusually join in the fray, this is not surprising. The three girls form a triad formidable enough to make all other Holy Trinities tremble and burst into tears.
There could have been more as FEA, FOTLA and NEMAIN, other warrior Goddess compatriots with shape-changing abilities, were hardly likely to sit on the sidelines when things got exciting. With crows wheeling and shrieking and startling transformations going on, who is going to stop to count? Especially when you are fleeing in terror, knowing they always picked the winning side.
When MEDB The Queen of Connaught employed the MORRIGAN Mob in her battle against Ulster and CUCHULAINN, more confusion was caused — as MEDB is similar to BADB. BADB was not as bad as MEDB, and the MORRIGANforces used fear itself as a weapon rather than adding to the slaughter.
MORRIGAN does have a loving side to her nature, and gave the Irish Hero CUCHULAINN every chance to make love not war. But would he listen? That’s why he is now only commemorated as a statue of a dying warrior with a MORRIGAN crow on his shoulder. Who knows what she could be saying to him?
Far from fading away, The MORRIGAN is still exceedingly popular and has many followers. There no longer seems to be a pecking order for battle crows; she is more into utilizing Earth energy — which is very nice to know. A Dark Green Goddess from the Emerald Isle.
